New plan

Today was an easy 5 miler; tommorrow I start a new base building plan. I'm excited! I've been on the run since 6:30 am and I'm really tired and I still have to babysit the nephews so I won't be home until 10ish. I thought retirement was supposed to be easy going and relaxing..

What is cool is that you used the words, "...an easy 5 miler..." I can remember when 5 miles seemed impossible and improbable. Funny , how 5 milers seem like a run around a track now.

What's the details of your new base building plan? Where did you find it? I'm currently in my base building phase, which I always do in the summer months, same plan as last year, but hopefully more mileage.

My base building plan is basically an extension from the marathon schedules from the book, "Advanced Marathoning" by Pfitzinger and Douglas.

Hi Bruce. I'm using a Hal Higdon marathon training plan for novices. I have 4 days of running, 2 days of rest, one day of crosstraining. I'll build up to the 30 mpw stage, then probably stick to that for a while. The plan has 2 short runs, 1 medium and 1 long run.

You can't go wrong with Hal Higdon's plans as they are logical and incorporates the hard/easy method of training. Nevertheless, don't follow ANY plan blindly, listen to your body, if your body says it's tired and needs a rest, give it what it needs...a shorter run or a day off. I always give myself a little guilt trip if I surrender to my body and give it a Recovery Run rather than something as planned, but I've learned it's better to recover than get an injury.

well put. I will be tweaking the plan as needed, I've never had a plan yet that I didn't change in one way or another. And I can repeat any weeks I need to since I don't have a race on the horizon.
